Roman Market of the Martyr Saints: A Historic Weekend in Santander from August 30th to September 1st
This summer, Santander will transform into a unique setting with the arrival of the Roman Market of the Martyr Saints. From August 30th to September 1st, the Alameda de Oviedo, Plaza del Rey Juan Carlos I, and Calle Burgos will be transformed to offer you an unforgettable experience where history and entertainment combine in a spectacular way.
The market will be open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, featuring more than 100 stalls offering handicrafts, food, toys, and entertainment. Besides shopping, you can enjoy a wide range of activities for all ages.
Highlighted Activities:
- Musical and theatrical parades: Throughout the market, the streets will be filled with music and historical characters performing in roaming shows. From gladiators to mythical creatures like Neptune and Medusa, and the appearance of the Great Elephant Hannibal, every corner will offer something surprising.
- Roman Camp: Curious about how ancient Roman soldiers lived and trained? In the Roman camp, you can witness gladiator fight exhibitions, attend the little gladiator school, or observe recreations of daily life in ancient Rome.
- Interactive workshops: If you’re passionate about history, don’t miss the workshops where you can learn to make historical objects, like the famous Roman shields (scutum) or legionis. Perfect for families seeking practical and educational activities.

Highlights include The Fire of Hannibal on Friday, Phiros, the God of Fire on Saturday, and the grand Roman Ritual on Sunday, marking the end of the market in style.
A Weekend for the Whole Family
Children will also have their own space. With more than 20 workshops and hands-on activities especially for them, they can become little gladiators, explore life in Roman camps, and enjoy stories, jesters, and family-friendly shows like The Dream of Flight or Cupid’s Arrows.
Connect with History
This market is not just a festive event but also a tribute to the city’s patron saints, San Emeterio and San Celedonio, whose history and legacy will be present throughout the weekend, enhancing the cultural and traditional aspect of the celebration.
