From August 27 to September 1, Santander celebrates La Semanuca, one of the city’s most emblematic festivals in honor of its patron saints, San Emeterio and San Celedonio. Recognized as a Regional Tourist Interest event, this festival concludes the summer with a range of activities that blend tradition, culture, and entertainment for all audiences.
History and Tradition
The festival of the Holy Martyrs has deep roots in Santander’s history. It is celebrated every August 30 and commemorates the arrival of the relics of Saints San Emeterio and San Celedonio in the city. According to tradition, San Emeterio and San Celedonio, native brothers from Calahorra, served as soldiers in the Roman legions under the rule of Emperor Diocletian in the late 3rd century. During this time, the emperor initiated one of the most brutal persecutions against Christians. Emeterio and Celedonio, embracing and professing their Christian faith, refused to make sacrifices to the Roman gods, leading to their imprisonment, torture, and eventual beheading.
Legend has it that after their execution, their heads were thrown into the Ebro River, starting a mysterious journey across the waters. They traveled all along the coastline, from Calahorra to the Bay of Santander. During their journey, it is said that the heads shaped the rock formation that over the centuries became known as the Isla de la Horadada, also called Peña de los Santos Mártires.
After this long and miraculous journey, the heads finally reached Cerro de Somorrostro, a place once bathed by the Cantabrian Sea. On this sacred site, where the current Santander Cathedral now stands, the Abbey of San Emeterio was eventually built. This hill has been a place of devotion and veneration for the faithful of Santander ever since, marking the spot where the saints’ relics were preserved and symbolizing the deep connection between the city and its patrons.
The legend, blending history and faith, has not only shaped a part of Santander’s spiritual past but also influenced its geography, symbolism, and culture. This festival is also a tribute to the origin of the city’s name and coat of arms, honoring the saints.
