Holy Week in Santander is one of the most prominent religious celebrations in the city, in which numerous penitential brotherhoods and fraternities participate. This year, the Holy Week in Santander will begin on Saturday, April 1st, 2023, with the procession of ‘Our Mother the Most Holy Virgin Mary on the Via Dolorosa’. Throughout the week, processions and religious events will take place, culminating on Easter Sunday.

The following is the program of processions for the Holy Week in Santander 2023:

Saturday, April 1st: Procession of ‘Our Mother the Most Holy Virgin Mary on the Via Dolorosa’ at 6:00 pm from the Church of San Francisco. At 7:00 pm, on Somorrostro Street, the Way of the Cross will take place with the participation of penitential brotherhoods.

Palm Sunday, April 2nd: The procession will begin at 10:45 am from the City Hall square and will go through Calvo Sotelo, arriving at the Atarazanas square, where at 11:15 am the blessing of the palms will take place, followed by the mass at the Cathedral and the subsequent procession, which will start at 1:15 pm towards La Porticada. In the afternoon, at 6:00 pm, the children’s procession will take place with the participation of the brotherhoods of Los Dolores and La Pasión.

Monday, April 3rd: The procession of La Esperanza will begin at 8:00 pm from the Church of San Francisco to the Valdecilla hospital and return.

Tuesday, April 4th: The procession of the Encounter will depart at 7:00 pm from the Church of the Pasionists and at 7:45 pm from the Church of the Carmelites. Both brotherhoods will meet at 8:30 pm at the feet of the Church of the Annunciation.

Wednesday, April 5th: Two processions will take place: the procession of Forgiveness and Silence, which will leave at 8:00 pm from the Chapel of La Merced, and the procession of Holy Mercy, which will begin at 11:15 pm in the Porticada Square, with a stop at midnight to sing the ‘Misere’ in the cathedral cloister. Holy Thursday, April 6th: The procession of the Holy True Cross and Passion of the Lord will begin at 8:00 pm in the City Hall square, while at midnight, the procession of the Holy Christ of Peace will depart from the Consolation parish. Good Friday, April 7th: General procession of the Holy Burial, which will begin at 8:00 pm from the City Hall square. The night will conclude with a general Way of the Cross of penance at 12:15 am with departure from the Church of San Francisco.

Holy Saturday, April 8th: Procession of the Diocese of Santander, and will involve the participation of all the penitential brotherhoods of the city. During the exhibition, which will remain open until Easter Sunday, the different steps and carvings that will process during the Holy Week in Santander can be contemplated.
